1900-O/CC One Dollar MS Values

Details

This popular variety shows an O mintmark punched for New Orleans punched over a CC mintmark for Carson City coins. The odd occurrence here is that not only are the two mints geographically far apart, but the last CC Morgan dollars struck were in 1893, seven years before 1900. Were old reverse dies used? Did an employee at the Philadelphia Mint, where the dies were created and punched, make a mistake by using a CC mintmark?

The answers are unknown, but this neat coin is nevertheless a coveted piece by Morgan dollar enthusiasts. This is not the scarcest of Morgan dollar varieties, but it is very tough, especially in the Gem range and higher. MS66s verge on rare, and the coin is exceedingly rare in MS67 or better. There are no known PLs or DMPLs.

down This coin is made of 90% silver; 10% copper and has a current melt value of $63.23
