The Greysheet ID (GSID) is a proprietary numbering system developed by Greysheet (Whitman Brands) to provide a unique, universal identifier for every type of United States coin and currency note.
It is designed to streamline how collectors, dealers, and inventory software manage numismatic data. Here are the key aspects of the system:
- Universal Cataloging
The GSID serves as a "master key" that links various disparate numbering systems. Because different references (like Red Book, PCGS, NGC, and Friedberg) often use different internal numbers for the same coin, the GSID provides a single, consistent reference point.
The GSID is currently the standard for Greysheet, Red Book Quarterly, Guide Book for United States Coinage, and CAC Grading. - Structure and Coverage
* Federal Coins: Covers all U.S. Pre-Federal and Federal issues from 1792 to the present, as well as a growing list of medals, tokens, and more.
* U.S. Paper Money: Includes a comprehensive mapping of U.S. Federal notes using the Friedberg numbering system.
* World Paper Money: Includes a comprehensive mapping of world bank notes using The Bank Note Book numbering system.
* Modern World Coin Issues: Extends to modern mint products from a growing list of world minters, including proofs, mint sets, and bullion issues like the American Silver Eagles, Britannias, Australian Koalas & Kukaburras, Mexican Libertads, and more. - Integration and Use
The GSID is heavily integrated into numismatic tools and publications to help users organize their collections:
* Inventory Management: Used in the Check List and Record Book of United States Coins and Paper Money to allow collectors to track their specific items accurately.
* Pricing Data: It connects specific coins to Greysheet wholesale pricing and Red Book retail values.
* Digital Compatibility: The system is designed for digital databases, making it easier for dealers to list inventory across multiple platforms without manual re-tagging. - Why it Matters
Before the GSID, a collector might find it difficult to sync a "Red Book" listing with a wholesale "Greysheet" bid. By using the GSID, a user can instantly know the exact variety, mint mark, and major attribution of a coin across all major Whitman and Greysheet resources.
