The goal of the society was “to be a remedy for slavery,” such that “slavery would cease in the state by the full consent of those interested,” but this goal was never achieved. It took the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 to bring slavery to an end in Maryland in the United States. The Maryland State Colonization Society founded a colony in southern Liberia in 1834. Over two decades, more than 1,100 former slaves emigrated from Fell’s Point, Maryland in the United States to the Maryland colony in Africa.
