The Banque de France series of France in the World Currency contains 707 distinct entries.

The Banque de France (Bank of France, BDF) was established pursuant to statute of 24 Pluviôse year VIII (13 February 1800) with its headquarters in Paris as a private institution for managing state debts and issuing notes. Banker Claude Périer drafted the first statutes and Emmanuel Crétet was the first governor. For the first fifteen years it was the sole issuer of banknotes in Paris, and this privilege was extended to other financially important cities and the rest of the country by 1848. Signature combinations have not been assigned variety numbers as is the standard elsewhere in The Banknote Book because doing so would have resulted in a confusing jumble due to the fact that over time the bank had overlapping issues with notes bearing either two or three signatures, some printed and some handwritten. Instead, samples of each signature have been reproduced in the following tables, sorted chronologically based upon the terms of service in the various offices.

Note variety descriptions list signatories’ names in the order they appear on the note, from left to right, or top to bottom.

Many images are courtesy of the Banque de France archives, which often has the only notes known to survive for early issues. Given their extreme rarity, values are not given for many issues as they simply aren’t available on the market at any price or any condition.
