1877 Half Union, Copper Pattern 50 Dollars PR RD J-1547 Values

Details

1877 $50 Half Union. In copper, J-1547, fewer than a dozen known including examples in the Smithsonian, Connecticut State Library, Durham Museum and the Harry W. Bass Jr. Research Foundation.

Obverse: Liberty Head by William Barber, facing left, wearing coronet inscribed LIBERTY and with top border of coronet ornamented with beads. Hair wavy and thick, B below for Barber. Thirteen stars around border, date 1877 below.

Reverse: Similar in style to the contemporary double eagle but with different details: a heraldic eagle with ornaments to left and right, stars, IN GOD WE TRUST above, rays above stars. Around border, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / FIFTY DOLLARS, and ornaments. Coronet tip between stars six and seven.
