1792 Birch Cent, White Metal Pattern Cent MS J-6 Values

Details

Dies seemingly from the same hand as Judd-3 through Judd-5. The style of the 1792 silver half disme is related to that of the famous copper Birch cent of the same year signed BIRCH, giving reason to attribute the authorship of the half disme to Birch as well.

Obverse: With curly hair and without the name BIRCH.

Reverse: In place of the fraction is the inscription: G.W. PT, for “George Washington, President.” One concept of the era, addressed in private coinage and tokens (but not in the federal series), was that of giving the name of the current president on coinage as it progressed, with a designation, such as PRESIDENT I, for Washington, the first.
