Stack’s Bowers Galleries Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction Delivers Strong Realizations Across Four U.S. Currency Sessions

The four sessions included great rarities and generational offerings which commanded remarkable realizations and attracted intense competition, leading to a final total of $7,085,455 once bidding had concluded. (All prices include the buyer’s fee.)

Session 3 offered bidders a fine assortment, from exceptional Colonial-era rarities to the exquisite holdings of the Caine Collection, which included a fine selection of “Santa Claus” Obsoletes representing rarely traded vignettes. This session featured a parade of generational opportunities that often-exceeded pre-sale expectations.

• Lot 20451: Kirtland, Ohio. Kirtland Safety Society Bank. 1837 $50. PMG Very Fine 30.Realized $21,960.

Session 4 presented remarkable National Bank Notes that included exceptional selections from the Jack Copeland Currency Collection. A Series of 1882 $5 Brown Back from the Territory of Hawaii issued by the First National Bank of Wailuku (Charter# 5994) during the early 1900s (Lot 21029) realized $122,000. Shortly after, a number of impressive prices were realized by pieces from a diverse range of note-issuing banks. These included notes pedigreed to the Copeland Collection, which represented many rare charters from the vast and varied landscapes of Texas.

• Lot 21211: Eagle Lake, Texas. $100 1929 Ty. 1. Fr. 1804-1. First NB. Charter #7534. PCGS Banknote Extremely Fine 40.Realized $6,710.

Session 8, Rarities Night, offered museum-level rarities along with exceptional fancy serial numbers found on a variety of denominations. The condition rarities offered included a Choice Uncirculated Fr. 2221-H $5,000 Federal Reserve Note from St. Louis issued under the Series of 1934 (Lot 23097) which realized $305,000. Also notable was a Gem Uncirculated Fr. 2407 $500 Gold Certificate issued under the Series of 1928 (Lot 23014), unsurpassed at PCGS Banknote, which realized $170,800.

Additional realizations from Rarities Night included a pair of impeccable Legal Tender Note rarities: a Fr. 187k 1880 $1000 (Lot 23018) brought $280,600 and a rarely seen Fr. 169 1875 $100 (Lot 23016) sold for $56,120. One of the finest surviving “Morgan Back” $5 Silver Certificates issued under the Series of 1886 and unsurpassed in the PMG Population Report (Lot 23025) realized $67,100.
