Incredible Rarities Shatter Records Amid Furious Bidding at Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Summer 2026 Global Showcase Rarities Night Session

Following a bidding marathon that lasted more than eight hours, the session’s 631 lots achieved total prices realized of $26,305,945. (All prices include the buyer’s premium.)

The action began early with the first lot, a locket featuring an example of the famed “Inverted Jenny” stamp, given by collector Col. Edward H.R. Green to his wife. It realized $439,200, more than 2.5 times the price it achieved in May 2015. Just 55 lots later, the sale’s highest price was recorded when the Norweb 1894-S dime, graded Proof-63 by PCGS, and approved by both CAC and CMQ realized $1,250,550.

“Strong prices were realized across every area of Rarities Night,” stated Brian Kendrella, president of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “Total prices realized far exceeded our presale estimates, and numerous new records were established. Although the rare coin market has followed an upward trajectory for the past several years, the strength demonstrated in this sale was extraordinary. Even our team of experts, with hundreds of years of combined experience and daily involvement in the marketplace, was astonished by the new price levels established throughout the evening.”

Lot 2010. 1793 Liberty Cap Half Cent. Head Left. C-2. Rarity-3. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. OGH. Realized $73,200, a record price for a PCGS-certified, CAC-endorsed example of this first year issue.

Lot 2048. Two-Piece Set of 1912 Pattern Buffalo Nickels. Uniface Obverse and Reverse Electrotrials. Design by James Earle Fraser. MS-64 (PCGS). Realized $122,000, an incredibly strong result for this historic pair of patterns.

Lot 2062.  1796 Draped Bust Quarter. B-2. Rarity-3. MS-62 (NGC). Gold CAC. CMQ-X. OH. Realized $292,800, exceeding prices realized for coins graded MS-63 and MS-64. 

Lot 2086.  1796 Draped Bust Half Dollar. Small Eagle. O-102, T-2. Rarity-5+. 16 Stars. MS-63 (NGC). CAC. CMQ-X. Ex. Col. Green and Eric Newman, realized $671,000, a record for the grade and exceeding its previous price record by more than $200,000.

Lot 2094. 1861-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar. State of Louisiana Issue. JD-1, W-01. Rarity-8. Specimen-63 (PCGS). Realized $170,800, far surpassing any prior price realized for a Specimen Strike of this important Civil War era issue. 

Lot 2108.  1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar. BB-20, B-2. Rarity-3. Two Leaves. AU-50+ (PCGS). CAC. CMQ. Realized $67,100, an extremely high price for an AU-graded 1795 Flowing Hair dollar.

Lot 2185. Space Flown 22 Karat Gold 2000-W Pattern Sacagawea Dollar. Judd-2190. Rarity-7. Proof-69 Deep Cameo (PCGS). Realized $390,400, exceeding its original auction price of $360,001 realized in September 2025.

Lot 2193.  1875 Gold Dollar. MS-65 (PCGS). CAC. CMQ-X. OGH. Realized $85,400, a record for the MS-65 grade and far exceeding any published price guides.

Lot 2205.  1808 Capped Bust Left Quarter Eagle. BD-1. Rarity-4. AU-58 (PCGS). Realized $219,600, a record for this important one-year only type in AU-58 grade.

Lot 2332.  1846-O Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-3. MS-61 (PCGS). Gold CAC. CMQ-X. OGH. Realized a world record price of $61,000.

Lot 2519. 1876 Liberty Head Double Eagle. JD-1. Rarity-6. Proof-64 (PCGS). CAC. OGH. Realized $439,200, a world record for any regular issue Proof 1876 double eagle.

Lot 2581. 1930-S Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Unc Details--Cleaned (PCGS). Realized $158,600, exceeding the  price a similar example brought in November 2024’s sale of the Bernard Richards Collection.

Lot 2590. Complete 1869 Proof Set of Minor and Silver Coinage. (NGC). CAC. OH. Grades ranged from Proof-64 to Proof-65, realized $82,350—far exceeding pre-sale expectations.

Lot 2613. 1851 Augustus Humbert $50. Lettered Edge. K-1. Rarity-6+. 50 DC, 880 THOUS., 50 on Reverse. AU-58+ (PCGS). CMQ. Realized $317,200, a record price for the issue, surpassing the previous record, which was for a Mint State example.
