About This Series

The Ministerio de Sanidad y Asistencia Social series of Venezuela in the World Currency contains 15 distinct entries.
Since 1810, leprosy patients were staying on an island then called Isla de Burros (Donkey Island), and later Isla de Providencia (Providence Island), near Maracaibo. From 1913 to 1939, tokens were issued on the island, but following the appearance of counterfeits, all tokens larger than 0.50 bolivar were withdrawn and replaced by banknotes issued by the Ministerio de Sanidad y Asistencia Social (Ministry of Health and Social Assistance, SAS).
