In the 18th century, the Husainidas instituted a hereditary monarchy in Tunisia. Ahmed Bey was the 10th Husainid ruler from 1837 to 1855 (AH1253 to AH1271). Ahmed Bey authorized the state bank, Dar-el-Mal (DEM), which was established in July 1847 by Mahmud bin ’Ayad. In May 1853, the bank failed after ’Ayad fled to France with its assets the year prior.
