Shortly before independence and the establishment of the Slovenian National Bank, both on 25 June 1991, private individuals in Ljubljana printed 1-lipa notes for use in Ljubljana and Maribor. These unofficial notes circulated briefly and were accepted by some businesses, but were never legal tender even though they bear the name Banka Slovenija, an institution which did not exist at the time.
