The Banca Naţională a României series of Romania in the World Currency contains 406 distinct entries.
The Banca Naţională a României (National Bank of Romania, BNR) was commissioned on 11/23 April 1880. The then-minister of finance, Ion Câmpineanu, became the first governor. The start-up capital amounted to 30 million lei, of which 10 million lei was state owned. On 16 December, the state withdrew from the association with the BNR, which turned into a privileged privately-owned bank, and the government’s rights passed on to the shareholders. The bank was granted the prerogative to issue currency until 31 December 1920, subsequently extended to 31 December 1930.
Signature combinations have not been assigned variety numbers as is the standard elsewhere in The Banknote Book. Instead, samples of each signature have been reproduced in the following tables, sorted chronologically based upon the terms of service in the various offices.
