On 1 September 1840, the New Zealand Banking Company (NZB) opened at Kororareka (present-day Russell) in the Bay of Islands on the North Island. In 1842, a branch was established in Auckland after the seat of government moved to that city. Take care not to confuse this company with the New Zealand Banking Corporation (NZBC) of 1863.
