In 1847, the Colonial Bank of Issue (CBI) was established with the exclusive authority to issue banknotes on behalf of the government. The future issue of private notes was prohibited, but the Union Bank of Australia was allowed to continue circulating notes as legal tender until 1 October 1852. On 3 June 1850, the Colonial Bank of Issue opened in Auckland and Wellington.
