The Greysheet Catalog (GSID) of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino series of Macau in the World Currency contains 510 distinct entries with CPG® values between $1.00 and $21,000.00.
On 16 May 1864, the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (National Overseas Bank, BNU) was established in Lisbon as a private issuing bank for Portugal’s overseas territories. Over time, BNU would issue notes in Angola, Cape Verde, Macau, Mozambique, Portuguese Guinea, Portuguese India, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor.
BNU’s branch in Macau opened in 1902.
In 1901, BNU was granted exclusive rights to issue legal tender banknotes for Macau denominated in patacas. Beginning 27 January 1906, notes in denominations of 1, 5, 50, and 100 patacas were introduced and all foreign coinage was outlawed. However, the Chinese, being accustomed to using silver for barter, were suspicious of this new paper money, and as such, banknotes always circulated at a discount in relation to silver coins.
