On 18 June 1948, a currency reform was announced for the western zones in Germany, and two days later the new deutsche mark replaced the reichsmark and rentenmark, which remained valid in the Soviet zone. The flood of notes entering the Soviet zone resulted in inflation. As an emergency measure, stamps were adhered to reichsmark and rentenmark banknotes—up to a limit of 70 reichsmark per person—if the owners were able to validate the origin of the notes.
