On 20 August 1991, Estonia formally declared independence from the USSR, which recognized the declaration on 6 September. Estonia was the first former Soviet republic to introduce its own currency, which it did on 20 June 1992, replacing the Soviet ruble with the Estonian kroon at a rate of 10:1.
