On 2 February 1855, El Banco Español de la Habana (The Spanish Bank of Havana, BEH) was created by royal decree and granted a 25-year charter to issue peso-denominated notes to replace the Spanish colonial reales then circulating in Cuba at a rate of 1:8. The bank began operations on 12 April 1856 with a capitalization of 3 million pesos. In 1881, the charter expired and the bank reorganized and was renamed El Banco Español de la Isla de Cuba (Spanish Bank of the Island of Cuba, BEC), but continued to issue notes bearing its old name until 1896.
