The Greysheet Catalog (GSID) of the Central Bank of Ceylon series of Ceylon in the World Currency contains 313 distinct entries with CPG® values between $1.00 and $1,800.00.
The Central Bank of Ceylon (CBC) was established by the Monetary Law Act No. 58 of 1949 and commenced operations on 28 August 1950. Curiously, the bank’s first governor, John Exter, was a citizen of the United States of America.
The notes issued by the CBC were numbered in series of 1,000,000 each for all denominations up to 10 rupees, and in series of 100,000 for 50- and 100-rupee notes. Initially prefix denominators ranged from 1 to 100, but eventually this upper limit was removed. Beginning in 1979, the 50-rupee notes were numbered in series of 1,000,000.
