The Union Bank of Burma (UBB) Act of 1947 established the UBB on 3 February 1948, taking over the central banking functions of the Rangoon branch of the Reserve Bank of India, which had served as the central bank of Burma since 1935. However, the currency system of Burma was still managed by the Burma Currency Board in London. Thus, it wasn’t until 1 July 1952 that the UBB was bestowed the full prerogative of a central bank with the new Union Bank of Burma Act, which was passed by the Chamber of Deputies on 17 March 1952.
