On 4 August 1982, the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan Act was enacted. Immediately thereafter, Her Royal Highness Ashi Sonam Choden Wangchuck, Representative of His Majesty in the Ministry of Finance, was appointed as the RMA’s first chairman, while the current minister of work and housing, Lyonpo Yeshey Zimba, became the RMA’s first managing director. Initially various central banking functions remained with the Ministry of Finance, but over time these responsibilities gradually shifted to the RMA.
On 1 November 1983, the RMA began actual operations by taking over the liability of notes and coins previously issued by the Ministry of Finance. The RMA also took physical possession of the government’s stock of unissued notes and coins.
