The Banque de Flandre (Bank of Flanders) series of Belgium in the World Currency contains 2 distinct entries.
The Banque de Flandre (Bank of Flanders, BDF), also known as the Banque Gantoise on account of its Ghent headquarters, wanted to be the Flanders equivalent of what the Banque Liégeoise represented for the Liège region. Shortly after its establishment in 1841, the Banque de Flandre began issuing paper money. The government mandated that at least one third of the bank’s paper money be backed by coin, a loan repayable on demand, or bills of exchange with a term of up to 90 days.
