1981-S Proof Set Cent-$1 PR Type 2, 6 Coins Values
Details
Original Packaging: The coins were mounted in a red plastic insert that was fitted between an upper and lower casing of transparent plastic. These parts were set within a black plastic frame bearing on its lower border the words UNITED STATES PROOF SET in silver letters. The frame included a slot into which the transparent casing could be inserted for desktop display. A black cardboard box housed the assembled set, and the words “UNITED STATES PROOF SET • 1981” were printed on it in silver script.
Commentary: When it was announced that no Anthony dollars would be produced for circulation in 1981, collectors boosted sales of the Mint’s Proof and Uncirculated sets. The high mintage for this date has hurt it a bit in the secondary market, with uncertified coins bringing no more than issue price even after twenty years of creeping inflation.
The dime received sharpened hubs for 1981. The portrait was lowered in relief and its details sculpted more distinctly. The new reverse featured broader and crisper lettering, as well as a similar lowering of relief. These changes extended the useful life of the dies. While such economy had little bearing on Proof production, it was essential to the mass production of coins for circulation.
In a repeat of 1979, the S mintmark puncheon was once again replaced after showing signs of failure. The Type 1 or Filled S of 1981 is, in fact, the Type 2 Clear S of 1979 after it, too, had deteriorated, and the terminology used is often confusing to collectors. While the 1981 Type 1 S is symmetrical and shaped much like the numeral 8 when viewed without a glass, the Type 2 mintmark is irregular in shape, with projecting knobs at each end.
Once again, both styles of mintmark are known for all denominations. The Type 2 mintmark is quite a bit more rare than it was in 1979, as the premiums attached to it reflect. The certified population is a bit misleading because submitters are more inclined to have the rare variety certified. This is an important concept across the board, for, in all series, coins with higher values have a higher certified population compared to their field population.
