1909/8 $20 Gold MS Values

Details

This is one of the most popular varieties among all Saint-Gaudens $20s and the only known overdate of the series. It was created from leftover 1908 No Motto dies and looks similar in overall appearance to those regular-issue pieces. While sought-after, it is easily obtainable in the marketplace, especially in higher circulated and lower uncirculated grades. Availability drops off in MS64 and the coin becomes especially rare in the grade of MS65 or better. Top-grade examples are especially valuable to registry set collectors.

down This coin is made of 90% gold; 10% copper and has a current melt value of $4,364.73

Obverse: Liberty is portrayed standing on a rock, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The word LIBERTY appears on the top periphery surrounded by stars. The date is stamped on the right side of the coin, just above the rock.

Reverse: A crescent sun appears at the bottom as if rising on the horizon with long rays extending to the top of the coin. A flying eagle covers the central portion, atop the rays. The words UNITED STATES oF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS appear on the top periphery.
