It is unknown why this coin was struck as a proof, or specimen, striking at the Denver mint, but perhaps a few were struck to mark the last year of the Liberty design before the Saint Gaudens' design was implemented. There are 3 known examples with a special striking.
This coin is made of 90% gold; 10% copper and has a current melt value of $4,838.12
Obverse: Christian Gobrecht's portrait of Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars with the date centered at the bottom.
Reverse: Shielded eagle with wings outstretched holding arrows and olive branches. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * TWENTY D. appear around the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears below the eagle's tail, above the N in TWENTY.
