1878 Gilt Copper Pattern $2.50 PR J-1567 Values

Details

1878 $2.50. The first in a series of gold patterns this year. The head seems to be too large for the field, and the design is hardly finessed. The widely-spaced motto, typically a minor part of any coin design, is placed in a very prominent position here.

Obverse: Liberty Head by Morgan, with hair combed back and held by a ribbon; band extending back from forehead inscribed LIBERTY. Around border, E PLURIBUS UNUM / 1878 at border.

Reverse: Eagle with drooped wings, holding an olive branch (with seven leaves) and three arrows. Around border, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / 2-1/2 DOLLARS around.
