1853 Moffat & Co. 20 Dollar Gold MS K-19 Values

Details

The last Moffat issue, an 1853 twenty-dollar piece, is very similar to the U.S. double eagle of that period. It was struck after John L. Moffat retired from the Assay Office. Despite a reported mintage of 75,636 examples, only around 50 1853 Moffat $20s are known today, ten of which exist in low mint state grades. Five examples were recovered from the S.S. Central America. A pair of proof Moffat $20s currently reside in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. They were originally part of the Mint Cabinet collection, and were struck from previously unreported dies.
