Details

Moffat & Company’s coins were intended to mimic the design of U.S. gold coins, with the word “LIBERTY” replaced by “MOFFAT & Co.” on Liberty’s diadem, and the legend “S.M.V CALIFORNIA GOLD.” on the reverse. There are several minor positional varieties of the reverse die known, and examples can be found from heavily circulated grades on up to gem uncirculated.

Obverse: Liberty Head with MOFFAT & Co on diadem 1849 thirteen stars around.

Reverse: Federal Eagle S.M.V. CALIFORNIA GOLD FIVE DOL.
