About This Series

The Central Bank of Yemen series of Yemen in the World Currency contains 1 distinct entries.
The Central Bank of Yemen (CBY) was established on 27 July 1971, with its headquarters in Sana’a, the capital of the Arab Republic of Yemen. The Central Bank of Yemen absorbed the functions of the Yemen Currency Board. When the Arab Republic of Yemen (“North Yemen”) and the Democratic Republic of Yemen (“South Yemen”) united on 22 May 1990 to form the Republic of Yemen, the north’s Central Bank of Yemen merged with the south’s Bank of Yemen, and the joint venture continued to use the name Central Bank of Yemen. For simplicity’s sake, all Central Bank of Yemen notes are included in the Yemen chapter, even though the earlier issues circulated exclusively in the Arab Republic of Yemen. In September 2016, President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi ordered the bank’s headquarters be moved from the capital Sana’a, controlled by Houthi rebels from the north, to the southern port city of Aden, where his government is based.
