About This Series

The Greysheet Catalog (GSID) of the Treasury series of United Kingdom in the World Currency contains 44 distinct entries with CPG® values between $16.00 and $14,500.00.
On 5 August 1914, with the passing of the Currency and Bank Notes Act, the Treasury (TRE) was empowered to issue 10-shilling and 1-pound notes. The UK government elected to have the Treasury, rather than the Bank of England, issue the notes because it felt they would be more acceptable in Scotland and Ireland, they would not be subject to Bank of England legal issuance limits, and because they could control the wording on the notes, avoiding the usual clause to ‘exchange for gold’.
