The Greysheet Catalog (GSID) of the Bank of England series of United Kingdom in the World Currency contains 681 distinct entries with CPG® values between $2.00 and $30,000.00.
The Bank of England (BOE), founded in 1694, is the central bank of the United Kingdom (UK). After the Sveriges Riksbank of Sweden, it is the world’s second oldest operational central bank, and second oldest operational note-issuing bank. Until 1946, when it was nationalized, it was privately owned by stockholders; in 1998 it became an independent public organization. Its headquarters has been on Threadneedle Street in the City of London since 1734, whence its nickname, “The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street.”
The bank regulates the issue of banknotes by commercial banks in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Bank of England notes circulate, and are accepted, not only throughout all the constituent territories of the United Kingdom, including Northern Ireland and Scotland, but also in other note-issuing territories of the sterling zone (Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, and Saint Helena). Historically, they were accepted in the Republic of Ireland from independence in 1921 until 1979.
Given the tremendous number of printing dates for many Bank of England note types, variety letters are not assigned to individual dates as is the standard elsewhere in The Banknote Book.
