On 7 February 1871, the Compagnie de la Nouvelle-Calédonie Banque (New Caledonia Company Bank, CNCB) was authorized by the Colonial Ministry as an issuing bank with a branch in Nouméa, headed by Governor Eugène Gaultier de la Richerie. The initial capitalization of 2,400,000 francs was raised to 4,000,000 francs after the name changed to the Banque de la Nouvelle-Calédonie in 1874.
