The Bank of Yemen series of Democratic Republic of Yemen in the World Currency contains 13 distinct entries.

On 30 November 1967, the region of South Arabia gained its independence from Britain and became known as the People’s Republic of South Yemen. Although never the official name, people began calling the country “South Yemen,” and consequently used the term “North Yemen” to refer to the Arab Republic of Yemen. Alternate forms were “Yemen (Aden)” for South Yemen and “Yemen (Sana’a)” for North Yemen, after their respective capital cities.

Following a Communist take-over in “South Yemen,” on 1 December 1970 the country’s name changed again, this time to the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen.
