The island of São Tomé was discovered by João de Santarém and Pêro Escobar on 21 December 1470, Saint Thomas Day, hence the name. São Tomé and neighboring Ilha do Príncipe were subsequently claimed as a colony by the Portuguese, who established sugar cane plantations worked by slaves.
