On 11 November 1918, Austro-Hungarian Emperor Charles I relinquished his right to take part in Austrian affairs of state. The next day, the National Assembly officially declared German-Austria (Deutschösterreich) a republic, and named Social Democrat Karl Renner as provisional chancellor.
