After the Russo-Turkish War (24 April 1877 - 3 March 1878), an autonomous Bulgarian state was created within the Ottoman Empire by the Treaty of Berlin signed on 13 July 1878. Although technically remaining under Ottoman sovereignty, Russia established a provisional government allowing Bulgaria to function independently with Alexander of Battenberg as its first prince.
