After the collapse of the Russian Empire during World War I, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia formed the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic on 24 February 1918. Just two months later, Georgia declared its independence, and within days Armenia and Azerbaijan followed suit.
