Proof Morgan dollars were struck during the duration of the series, spanning from 1878 through 1921. In some cases, these proofs were struck in very limited quantities or as presentation pieces. This was the situation with the so-called 1921 Morgan dollar proofs, which are more accurately referred to as special strikes, made with polished dies and circulation-quality planchets. In other cases, the mintages of proof Morgan dollars ran into the hundreds or thousands, as happened throughout much of the late 19th and very early 20th centuries. In at least one circumstance, proofs represented the only known examples for the year from a particular US Mint facility, as was the case for Philadelphia-minted dollars of 1895.

Proof Morgan dollars are highly collectible, and they enjoy huge collectorship among the legions of Morgan dollar enthusiasts who will spend virtually any amount to obtain at least one example of every kind of Morgan dollar. Such a pursuit is at the very least grandly expensive and in most cases consumes the better part of a decade or more to complete, even when money is no object -- some proof Morgan dollars are just that rare. Proof Morgan dollars present collectors with several challenges, but for the most part assembling a set of all proof Morgan dollars, including the rare branch-mint, 1895, and 1921 proofs, is possible with patience.

About CDN Prices

All CDN prices are based on proprietary market knowledge and technology developed by CDN Publishing, LLC.

CPG® prices represent retail levels. Collectors should refer to CPG values as a starting place for their negotiations, or auction bid reference.

Greysheet/Greensheet prices are wholesale market levels for collectible coins/paper money intended to indicate what a dealer, or wholesale, buyer would pay for the described item in the specified grade. Greysheet/Greensheet represent "sight-seen" values based on a buyer's in-hand review. The actual value can be more or less than this depending on factors including eye appeal and market timing.

Bluesheet (NGC & PCGS) prices represent the highest sight-unseen offers to buy on dealer networks like CDN Exchange. In many cases, there are no active sight-unseen buy offers, so CDN looks to the recent lowest market values for such an item. For this reason, Bluesheet values typically represent the floor of the market for the specified item. CDN only tracks Bluesheet on certain items.

CAC prices are for U.S. coins that meet the standards of the Certified Acceptance Corporation. You can learn more about CAC on their web site.
