(1832) C. Bechtler $2.50 Gold MS 75 GR, Beaded Border, K-8 Values

Details

The Kagin-8 quarter eagle was issued beginning in late 1831, utilizing the dies used to strike the Kagin-6, with the addition of the weight, “75.G.” beneath “20.C.” on the obverse. Bechtler appears to have used these dies for around two years, and a late state of the reverse die has been observed with pronounced bulging in the center around RUTHERFORD. Although the Kagin-8 is the most available beaded border Bechtler of either denomination, there are still fewer than 20 examples known. As many as 15 coins exist in private hands, including a few mint state pieces. The choice BU Crouch/Allen specimen is acknowledged to be the finest known example.

Obverse: 2 50. 20.C. 75.G. NORTH CAROLINA GOLD.

Reverse: RUTHERFORD COUNTY. * C.BECHTLER, ASSAYER.
