Details

Obverse: In the center, the National Shield (Mexican Golden Eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a snake) in sculpted relief, with the inscription “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” (UNITED MEXICAN STATES) forming a semicircle above it.

Reverse: General Francisco Villa mounted on a horse, with Generals Felipe Ángeles and Pánfilo Natera, central figures in the Taking of Zacatecas. Below, the silhouette of the top of the mountain of La Bufa (cerro de La Bufa), a strategic vantage point for the ongoing battle to gain control of the city. In the upper exergue, the legend “CENTENARIO DE LA TOMA DE ZACATECAS” (Centennial of the Taking of Zacatecas) and in the lower exergue, the years “1914-2014” (alluding to the 100th anniversary), the 20-peso denomination ($20), and the mintmark (M°).
