Amazonian Gold 6 Coins Pattern Gold Set PR Values

Details

The unique set of 1872 “Amazonian” pattern coins in gold is one of the most celebrated rarities in the entire series of U.S. coins. This spectacular set is unique in many ways: (1) it is the only set of its kind ever made, (2) it is the only set of gold patterns ever produced with a common design theme, and (3) the $3 gold piece in the set is the only pattern of this denomination ever to have been struck in gold!

Obverse: The obverse of the coins feature a head of Liberty wearing a liberty cap bound by a band with the word “LIBERTY” written upon it. The head is surrounded by 13 stars; the date “1872” is below the bust. This head is an enlarged version of that used on Barber’s Amazonian pattern quarters, half dollars, and silver dollars, thus the appellation was applied to the gold patterns, as well.

Reverse: Barber’s Standing Eagle with talons holding shield. Similar to the silver Amazonian issues. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / ONE DOL. around border.
