New gold, platinum and silver proof coins honour VE or, Victory in Europe Day, one of the greatest moments in world history. Iconic images of VE Day continue to serve and remind of the magnitude of events when millions came together in the streets to celebrate the end of the war in Europe. More than six years of combat on both the battlefield and closer to home had finally come to an end. When the news filtered onto the streets of capitulation of the Third Reich brought on by the death of the German Fuhrer, people broke into spontaneous celebrations on the streets in Britain, countries still under German occupation and all across the world. This momentous occasion was celebrated by the Allied nations, including Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, Canada, Australia and many others who had fought together against the Axis powers.

There was an outpouring of joy and relief that the war in Europe was over and great hope for a better future. The reconciliation and reconstruction could begin as the continent took its first steps towards lasting peace. But, for others it was a sad time, as they were left to reflect on those they had lost. For many servicemen however, the war wasn’t over as the celebrations were just temporary since the prospect of deployment to the Far East and Pacific beckoned. This period of rejoicing was only brief as the monumental task of rebuilding countries and lives awaited. For those who had lost friends, family and loved ones, the occasion was bittersweet.

Following news of Germany's unconditional surrender, the 8th May 1945 – Victory in Europe VE Day was declared a public holiday. “This is your victory,” declared Winston Churchill, paying tribute to the British people who had remained unbowed by the bombings and blackouts. Ultimately, a spontaneous massive crowd gathered in front of Buckingham Palace, the many thousands of jubilant celebrants were calling to see King George VI and Queen Elizabeth who appeared on the balcony along with Churchill and the Princess Elizabeth – she in her Women’s Auxiliary uniform and Princess Margaret. Today, VE Day remains in the memory of the decreasing numbers still alive who witnessed it. Eighty years on, the Nation thanks the generation who gave so much and honours their spirit and sacrifice.

The reverse side of the gold, platinum and silver proof coins features an image of the winged angel of victory angel symbolizing both a celebration over the enemy and remembrance of the sacrifices made for our freedom during the Second World War. A banner ribbon in the background includes the inscription VE DAY 1945 and 2025. Below and along the lower rim is the additional text VICTORY IN EUROPE 80TH ANNIVERSARY. The obverse side includes an effigy of HM King Charles III created by engraver Glyn Davies. The legend surrounding the portrait reads CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · ST HELENA with the denomination and year of issue 2025 placed below the King’s likeness.
