Italy. New Proof and Colour Coins Highlight the Best of Italy Brands Featuring Campari Beverage
The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato release their latest coins in salute to iconic Italian brands.
It is 165 years since the founding of the Campari brand and product by Gaspare Campari. The Italian alcoholic liqueur, considered an apéritif of the bitter variety by Italians and an Amaro or, herbal liqueur that is commonly consumed as an after-dinner digestif by the rest of the world. Originally coloured with carmine dye, derived from crushed cochineal insects which gave the drink its characteristic red colour. The liqueur became so distinctive and popular, that its appearance had not been altered until the Campari Group discontinued the use of carmine as recently as 2006.
As Gaspare’s business and brand grew in popularity, he saw an opportunity to run his business from the newly built Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the cultural epicentre of Milano. He moved into the majestic new building and named his premises Caffè Campari which looked out opposite the iconic Piazza Duomo. It was here that his eldest son Davide Campari, heir of the Campari business, was born on 17th November 1867.
Campari soon outgrew their Caffè Campari premises in terms of production due to both domestic and international demands for the outstanding drink. As a result, the company moved into their first Campari laboratory and production facilities in Milano. Even this move could not keep pace with the continued success and, in 1904, in order to meet greater demand, Campari moved to a purpose-built plant in Sesto San Giovanni, which has remained the home of the Campari Group Headquarters. Gasparo’s son Davide continued his father’s passion to bring the iconic spirit of Campari and the unmistakable style of the Milanese company to the world. Today, the Campari brand is now distributed in over 190 countries and remains an everlasting emblem of Italian style and excellence.

Designed by Emanuel Feretti, the obverse side focuses on the elegant and minimalist lines of the cannetté pattern, a design that characterises the classic bottles of Campari, and are reproduced in the centre. Superimposed is text replicating the brand CAMPARI with the signature Davide Campari Milano placed below. Along the upper rim and above the primary design is the text REPUBBLICA ITALIANA. The reverse side includes elements from the iconic poster featuring the 1920’s mascot spiritello wrapped in orange peel which is centred and with vivid colour added to the relief. Along the rim from the top is the text BITTER CAMPARI and at the bottom left is the signature of the poster’s creator CAPPIELLO along the R mintmark identifying the Mint of Rome and 2025 the year of issue. Just to the right of spiritello is the denomination 4 EURO and along the lower rim is the name of the engraver E.FERRETTI.
