Established on the 11th October 1976, the Malta Housing Authority - MHA marks its 50th Anniversary this year. The milestone occasion celebrates five decades of commitment and dedicated work to providing standardised social and affordable housing opportunities, promoting stability, and supporting social mobility across the country.

Since its initial establishment, the Authority has evolved from primarily providing social housing to four core functions. A primary function is providing a crucial safety net for low-income households through stable and affordable accommodation. The second function is initiating services aimed at improving housing affordability, including homeownership and rental affordability schemes, as well as initiatives that enhance purchasing power and support property refurbishment. A third service is overseeing the renovation and modernisation of its housing stock, including lift installations and embellishment of existing units and the fourth is guaranteeing compliance within both the private property market and government-owned buildings to equal availability to all Maltese.

These services have had a very positive impact on households and are continuously updated to reflect the evolving needs of the Maltese community and the property market. Annually, the Housing Authority assists over 12,000 families annually. The Authority’s work continues and extends beyond schemes and services, reflecting its commitment to transparency and providing a basic function to ensure adequate housing is available to all in need.

The silver coins are produced by the Royal Dutch Mint at their facilities in Houten, Netherlands on behalf of the Central Bank of Malta. The obverse side features as its central design a traditional Maltese door knocker known as a habbata, an iconic symbol deeply embedded within Malta's architectural and cultural heritage. Just under the habbata is the coin’s denomination 10 EURO. Above and along the upper rim is the text MALTA HOUSING AUTHORITY. Below the primary design along the lower rim is the celebratory text 50TH ANNIVERSARY. The commemorative years 1976 and 2026 are placed on the left and right side of the ornamental door knocker. The reverse of the coin features Malta's national coat of arms consisting of the Maltese crest along with the top portion of a tower fortress. The text MALTA is placed to the left of the crest and the year of issue 2026 is placed on the right. The entire design is encircled with twelve incused stars symbolising Malta’s membership in the EU and euro-zone.
