Distinctive Morgan Dollars Lead Heritage’s July Attractively Toned U.S. Coins Showcase Auction

Exceptional eye appeal and premium-certified examples attracted strong collector interest in Heritage’s July 20 Attractively Toned U.S. Coins Showcase Auction, which realized $237,212. The event featured an impressive selection of vividly toned Morgan dollars, proof coinage and certified collector favorites.

Leading the sale was a 1942 Half Dollar, PR67 NGC that realized $6,100. With a proof mintage of just 21,120 pieces, the beautifully preserved Walking Liberty half dollar demonstrated the enduring appeal of Superb Gem proof examples of Adolph Weinman’s beloved design. A richly toned 1882-S Morgan Dollar, MS67★ NGC, followed closely at $5,856. Although the San Francisco Mint produced more than 9.25 million examples, collectors consistently pursue extraordinary survivors that combine superb preservation with exceptional toning. The lofty MS67 grade, paired with dramatic visual appeal, made this Morgan dollar one of the event’s standout performers.

Another highlight was an 1883-CC Morgan Dollar, MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS, which realized $5,124. Carson City Morgan dollars have long occupied a special place in American numismatics, and examples displaying Deep Mirror Prooflike surfaces remain especially desirable. The combination of the famed Carson City mintmark, Gem preservation and reflective fields generated strong competition among collectors.

An 1880-S Morgan Dollar, MS65 PCGS, achieved $4,880, illustrating once again that exceptional toning can elevate even widely collected dates. While the San Francisco Mint struck 8.9 million pieces, premium-quality examples with vibrant natural color continue to attract advanced collectors seeking superior eye appeal for competitive Registry Sets.

Rounding out the top results was a 1923-S Peace Dollar, MS64 PCGS, CAC, which realized $4,392. Although more than 19 million pieces were struck, CAC-approved examples in premium Mint State grades remain difficult to locate. The coveted CAC endorsement, combined with outstanding preservation and attractive toning, helped propel this desirable Peace dollar among the auction’s leading results.
