About This Series

The Greysheet Catalog (GSID) of the Deutsche Rentenbank series of German Democratic Republic in the World Currency contains 63 distinct entries with CPG® values between $1.00 and $225.00.
On 18 June 1948, a currency reform was announced for the western zones in Germany, and two days later the new deutsche mark replaced the reichsmark and rentenmark, which remained valid in the Soviet zone. The flood of notes entering the Soviet zone resulted in inflation. As an emergency measure, stamps were adhered to reichsmark and rentenmark banknotes—up to a limit of 70 reichsmark per person—if the owners were able to validate the origin of the notes. Only stamped banknotes could be exchanged when the Deutsche Notenbank issued the new deutsche mark with the subsequent currency reform. Colloquially, these reissued banknotes were referred to as Klebemark (sticker marks) or Kuponmark (coupon marks). Be aware that quantities of official adhesive stamps are available in private hands and dealers have been known to apply them to legitimate early German notes. As such, there is no way to know for certain if a given note was officially produced during the 1948 currency reform period or is a modern creation. The two lowest denomination notes were printed by almost 120 different printers (distinguishable only by serial numbers and prefixes). While many varieties exist for the specialist collector to attempt to acquire, valuations are consistent.

Greysheet Catalog Details
