About This Series

The Greysheet Catalog (GSID) of the $5 Classic Head Gold (1834–1838) series of Pre-1933 Gold Coinage in the U.S. Coins contains 9 distinct entries with CPG® values between $625.00 and $114,000.00.
In 1834, a new design for the half eagle gold coin was introduced with a ribbon binding Liberty's hair, bearing the word LIBERTY, replaced the previous liberty cap design. The motto was omitted from the reverse. The so-called "Classic Head" series was short lived (1838-1840) with coins struck in Philadelphia, Charlotte, and Dahlonega.
