Wales U.K. Limited Edition Gold Medals Features Gold Produced Exclusively From Welsh Mines
A very limited number of medals containing one ounce of pure Welsh gold will soon be auctioned.
The Mine which the gold is extracted from is from the Clogau-St David’s Gold Mine in Snowdonia or, Eryri National Park in Wales where gold was first discovered in 1854. The greatest period of production at the Mine was in the late 19th and early 20th century. In total, about 80,000 ounces of gold was extracted from
the Mine, making it by far the United Kingdom’s most prolific source of domestic gold production.
The Mine had lain largely inactive since the 1990’s, until Alba Mineral Resources Plc and its
subsidiary Gold Mines of Wales Limited acquired the rights to the Mine in 2018 and embarked upon
the most extensive underground exploration and rehabilitation programme seen there in many
decades. Alba Mineral Resources has commissioned the minting of just three medals which contains one full ounce of Welsh gold entirely sourced from the Clogau-St David's Gold Mine.
Aside from its unique Welsh heritage, Clogau gold also has a special connection to the British Royal Family, with Welsh gold having been used to make the wedding bands for Royal weddings over the last 100 years beginning with the wedding of King George VI and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1947, King Charles III and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 and most recently Prince William and Miss Catharine Middleton in 2011. As such, this first limited production of such high quality medals is expected to attract significant interest from both UK and overseas collectors and investors.

The three un-dated limited edition pure gold medals were minted in late 2024 by Betts Refiners - est. 1760 at their facilities in Birmingham, England on behalf of Alba Mineral Resources Plc. They are produced exclusively from gold mined from the historic Clogau-St David's Gold Mine in the Snowdonia National Park in Wales. The obverse side features a striking and detailed Welsh dragon sitting astride Cadair Idris, one of the most famous mountains in Snowdonia. The primary design is centred and is encircled with the text GOLD MINES OF WALES placed along the upper rim and 1oz FINE GOLD placed below. The design is complemented with a short border of traditional Welsh knot patterns on either side. The design on the reverse side is inspired by an historic photograph of miners standing outside the Tyn y Cornel adit entrance at Clogau, which was taken during the heyday of gold production at the Clogau Mine, and still by far the UK's greatest ever producer of gold. Above the primary design is the inscription LIMITED EDITION and below the image is the text TYN-Y-CORNEL. The design is complemented with a short border of traditional Welsh knot patterns on either side.
