For 2026, it’s the turn of the Spice Girls to join the long list of the greatest singers and songwriters in British history. The world's best-selling female group marks 30 years since the release of Wannabe and debut album Spice. It was in 1996 that the Spice Girls first exploded into the charts, reaching number one in 37 countries and launching a cultural ‘Girl Power’ movement inspiring millions of young girls around the world. A singing group whose songs and unforgettable fashion proved that Girl Power could conquer the world. The Spice Girls didn't just dominate pop music, they defined an important chapter of the 90’s.
The Spice Girls, originally named Touch were formed in 1994 by Heart Management who held auditions to create an all-girl group to compete with the British boy bands so popular at the time. The final line-up of the group comprised Melanie Brown ‘Scary’, Melanie Chisholm ‘Sporty’, Emma Bunton ‘Baby’, Geri Halliwell ‘Ginger’, and Victoria Adams ‘Posh’. Early on however, the budding group decided to take control of their career and left Heart Management, taking the master recordings of their demos to ensure their independence. They then signed with talent agent Simon Fuller and, after a bidding war, signed a record deal with Virgin Records who rebranded them as the Spice Girls. Their rapid, meteoric rise to global fame defined a generation with their brand of catchy pop music, and distinct personalities. They quickly transitioned from a managed pop project into a massive, self-driven cultural phenomenon.
The group’s debut single Wannabe went to the number one position in countries all over the world and became the best-selling single by a female group in history. Their high-energy, infectious pop and a message of independence brought them international notoriety and the phrase Girl Power became an everyday popular phrase. Likewise, their highly anticipated debut album entitled Spice was released in late 1996, which became the best-selling album of 1997 worldwide and ultimately the best-selling album by a female group in history. In 1997, Geri Halliwell stunned audiences when she wore a mini dress created out of the British Union Jack flag at the industry’s Brit Awards which became one of the most famous outfits in pop history. Following on with their immense worldwide popularity, a feature film starring all band members entitled Spice World was a box office success and launched the massive Spiceworld Tour, becoming the highest-grossing concert tour by a female group at the time.
With Geri Halliwell’s departure from the group in May 1998 during the Spiceworld Tour, citing exhaustion and differences with her fellow band members, the now four-member group continued with the tour. As a touching acknowledgement of Geri having left the group, the remaining Spice Girls released a Christmas song in 1998 entitled Goodbye which became the band’s eighth number-one single in the UK. At the end of 2000, the group announced an indefinite hiatus to pursue solo careers, having achieved nine UK number-one singles.
The original five-member line-up reunited again and announced a new tour entitled ‘The Return of the Spice Girls’ for 2007 and 2008. They also performed at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony and more recently the group toured in 2019 to explore reunion possibilities. Throughout their career, the Spice Girls were known for their equal song-writing contributions, distinct personalities and their ability to dominate the music industry. During their active years the group sold over 105 million records worldwide and their legacy as the most successful girl group of all time has been firmly established.

The Royal Mint worked closely with the band to carefully devise a design that celebrates the incredible legacy of The Spice Girls. The design was created by artist Ffion Gwillim Rees and captures all five members striking a pose in silhouette, alongside their authentic autographs of Emma, Geri, Mel B, Mel C and Victoria placed below each figure. It is the first design to feature all members of a band and their autographs as part of the design. Above the complete line-up of the band members and autographs is the often-used official band logo SPICE GIRLS which is centred. A separate mintage of the BU base metal coins includes vivid pink, magenta, green, yellow and orange colours to highlight the silhouettes of the band members. The obverse side includes the effigy of HM King Charles III created by engraver Martin Jennings. Both the denomination ranging from 50 PENCE to 200 POUNDS and the year of issue, 2026 is shown as part of the legend surrounding the King’s likeness.
