With around 1,500 lakes and a dense network of rivers, Switzerland is considered an important water reservoir in the heart of Europe. Its lakes not only shape this landlocked country’s landscape but also serve as extraordinary and unique habitats for numerous animal and plant species. At the same time, these waterways are places of tranquillity, leisure and inspiration.
The third coin in this four-part Swiss Lakes series pays tribute to the country’s largest lake as a distinctive natural and cultural heritage site at the heart of Europe. Lake Geneva, known in French as Lac Léman is famous for its crescent shape shared between France and Switzerland. The lake features the iconic Jet d'Eau in Geneva, the historic Chillon Castle, a medieval fortress located on a rocky island near Montreux, known as Switzerland's most visited historical monument and the Lavaux vineyards. Spanning 580 square kilometres or 223 square miles, it is a deep lake on the north side of the Alps, and the largest freshwater lake in Switzerland as well as one of the largest in Western Europe.
Lake Geneva is renowned for its clear, blue water supporting a thriving ecosystem with around 30 species of fish, including perch and trout. The lake is a primary source for drinking water, its primary source being the Rhône River which flows from the Alpine glacier, through the canton of Valais, and into the eastern end of Lake Geneva near Villeneuve. Lake Geneva is also one of Switzerland’s great tourist attractions with over 100 beaches and various water sports.

The obverse shows a bird's-eye view of Switzerland's largest lake. The landscapes surrounding the lake are outlined with contoured lines towards the edge of the coin. The name of the lake LAC LEMAN appears in stylised cursive letters next to the image and blends harmoniously into the landscapes of the cantons of Geneva, Vaud and Valais, as well as France.
On the reverse, all four coins in the new Swiss lakes series shares the same striking graphic design featuring stylised elements of peaks representing Swiss Mountains and wavy lines representing waterways or, lakes. To the left of these elements is a circle that includes an outline of the Swiss Cross. The overall design symbolises Switzerland's role as Europe's water tower. Around the primary design and along the rim is the text CONFOEDERATIO + HELVETICA 2026 withthe letter B representing the Bern Mint placed just after the year. Below the motif is the denomination 20 FR. Both coins include the raised edge inscription in Latin DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT (The Lord will provide) along with thirteen five-pointed stars.
